Mock Meet & Community Potluck THIS SATURDAY!

This Saturday, January 13, we are hosting a Mock Powerlifting Meet. There will no group class that day.

This event will be run like an actual meet, designed to give you experience with commands, refs, and everything that goes along with lifting at a real powerlifting meet.

On this same day, we are hosting APEX PWR and their DEXA Scan van. The link to book an appointment for a scan is in our bio.

And after the meet, we will have a Community Potluck. 🎉

Everyone is invited! And you don’t even have to lift if you don’t want to. You can just come and hang out. 😃

Please reach out or ask your coach if you have questions.

Member Spotlight: Charlie Finks

We are SO EXCITED to announce our new MEMBER SPOTLIGHT!!!

Spearheaded by Melissa and Charlie, this program will feature bi-weekly (or so) posts about one of our awesome members so we can all learn a little bit more about the people in our community.

This week’s Member Spotlight features Charlie himself.

What’s your name and how old are you? Charlie, 54

Ever had a cool nickname? When I was doing military radio, my DJ name was Phatboy. Some of my Navy friends still call me that.

Married? Kids? Never married, no kids, no plans to change that.

Where did you grow up and what’s your opinion of the place? Chapel Hill, NC. I like college towns, and Chapel Hill has many charms, but I was still glad to leave.

What’s your all-time favorite movie? Raising Arizona.

How long have you been a member at the gym? Since 2012, so almost 12 years now.

Tell us about your all-time favorite pet. His name was Leroy. He was my dog from maybe age 6 to age 20. He roamed free, loved to bark at squirrels, and was the best dog ever.

What class or classes do you usually attend? I’m pretty much an automatic for Tuesday/Thursday at 1:30. I’ve started going in on Saturday or Sunday afternoon for my own, much slower workout.

Pancakes, waffles, or french toast? Pancakes. Easy choice.

Were you an athlete growing up, and if so, what sports did you play and were you any good? I loved playing baseball and basketball, but was only good enough for the city rec league. In college, I discovered ultimate frisbee and played that pretty seriously for 25 years.

Where in Portland has the best burger? Killer Burger.

What’s your favorite workout/movement? Pull ups. Any bodyweight exercise, really. Us little guys love the bodyweight stuff.

What’s your least favorite workout/movement? Wall balls. They psych me out as soon as I see them on the board.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Time travel, if that counts. If not, either invisibility or superspeed.

What’s the longest you’ve ever stayed in the sauna? The cold plunge? Maybe 25 minutes in the sauna and 3 and a half minutes in the cold plunge.

Where was the hottest weather you’ve ever been in? The coldest? 130 degrees in Qatar, -40 in northern Ontario.

Has a workout ever made you puke? No, but I’ve come close like 4 or 5 times. Had to run into the bathroom and everything.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Octopus. Little tiny guys with pasta and tomato sauce. Not great, to be honest.

What’s your current gym goal? 300 pound deadlift. I’m currently at 280, so I think I can get it in 2024.

And finally, what’s your advice to new members of the gym?

Don’t compare yourself to the hardchargers in your class.  You didn’t come to the gym to do something that’s hard for THEM, you came to do something that’s hard for YOU.  Was your workout hard for you?  Congratulations, you win!

Pastured Pork Available!

Hey team! We are taking delivery of some delicious pastured pork in the not too distant future (I should know an exact date/time soon).

We have some shares available (1/2 pig usually comes in at around 100lbs–and it doesn’t take up as much space in your freezer as you might think). I’ll know the exact weights soon as well.

You can also split a half with someone if 100lbs sounds like too much.

Only $7/lb for all the cuts: chops, roasts, ground, etc… and bacon and cured ham as well!

Let me know asap if you’re interested! Thanks!

Bring a Friend Day: Saturday, February 3

Hey everyone!

We are excited to announce the return of Bring-a-Friend Day, this time in conjunction with a very special event: the 15th anniversary of the gym!!!

Ask your coach if you have any questions about this event.

See you at the gym! 💪🏼
