Your neighborhood gym

Powerlifting crew! We are starting a new block this week. This is a high-volume phase. For each superset, you should move quickly from one exercise to the next (no rest). Rest about 90 seconds between supersets. This will be hard. But you’re gonna get jacked! 💪🏼

This week’s member spotlight features the legend himself, Floyd Carter. 💪🏼
Upon joining the gym, Floyd felt immediately like an essential part of our community.
His energy and intensity are unmatched, and despite his sometimes grumpy face, he’s one of the kindest and most genuine people I know (he might be mad at me for outing him 😂).
Enjoy this interview with Floyd.
And once again, thanks to Melissa and Charlie for organizing these member spotlights!
Have a great week everyone!

Floyd Carter, 48.

Lots of nicknames, but I didn’t think they were cool.
❓Married? Kids?
Life partner. She has two daughters.
❓Where did you grow up and what’s your opinion of the place?
I grew up all over. My mom’s a retired colonel, so we lived everywhere. My home bases were East Tennessee and Colorado. A lot of outdoor activities, which is where my heart is.

It’s neck-and-neck between Jaws and Big Trouble in Little China.
❓How long have you been a member at the gym?
Joined at the end of Spring, 2023.
❓Tell us about your all-time favorite pet.
Our current Australian Shepard, Waylon – named after Waylon Jennings. He’s a handful and he’s oppositional defiant, so he fits right into our household.
❓What class or classes do you usually attend?
The workouts with Steph, Hillary, and Dawn.
❓Pancakes, waffles, or french toast?
French toast, man. I wake up thinking about pancakes, but if you said ‘I’m gonna make french toast,’ I’d say ‘Gimme!’
❓Were you an athlete growing up, and if so, what sports did you play and were you any good?
I was a pretty good soccer player. I went to college on a scholarship.
❓Where in Portland has the best burger?
Wolf’s Head! It’s a new smashburger joint underneath Morrison Bridge.
❓What’s your favorite workout/movement?
Power cleans.
❓What’s your least favorite workout/movement?
Thrusters. Who likes thrusters? Fucking sociopaths?
❓If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Oh, man, that’s too hard. My top two are invisibility or mind control.
❓What’s the longest you’ve ever stayed in the sauna?
30 minutes plus.
❓The cold plunge?
I hit 10 minutes once.
❓Where was the hottest weather you’ve ever been in?
Oklahoma, 110.
❓The coldest?
Got to be Alaska, minus 17.
❓Has a workout ever made you puke?
Not here, but once at soccer practice.
❓What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?
Ostrich, on a rooftop, over an open flame, in Vietnam.
❓What’s your current gym goal?
Besides not sucking? Improve my back squat range and power.
❓What’s your advice for new members of the gym?
Take advantage of the community. It’s unique, and it’s all things positive.

Hopefully this will be the last one of these I have to post this week.
Even though it’s warming up, the roads have not melted enough for our coaches to feel safe driving to the gym.
The gym is open, but the 4:30 & 5:30 are canceled this afternoon.
Thanks for understanding, and we’ll see you all tomorrow!!! 💪🏼

The 10am is canceled today, Wednesday, Jan 17.
Hopefully it will warm up and start to thaw in time for the afternoon classes today.
Stay tuned for updates.

Hey team!
This block, we are starting a focused pull-up development program.
On these days, you will see two tracks: one for people who don’t have strict pull-ups, and one for people who do.
Both will be written on the board, and your coach will help you figure out which you should follow.
