❓What’s your name and how old are you? My name is Lucinda Curry, but I go by Lucy, and I’m 29.
❓Ever had a cool nickname? No, but I had some friends in middle school and they called me Lucifer. That wasn’t very fun.
❓Married? Kids? I’m married to Trygve, and no kids. We’re thinking about it. We want to turn 30 first.
❓Where did you grow up and what’s your opinion of the place? I kind of grew up all over the place. My dad was in the military. We lived in Germany when I was a kid, which was pretty cool, but then it was all stateside after that. We lived in Arizona and California… and I think that’s it. I really grew up in Redding, California, which is Tryg’s hometown, too. I would never move back there, but all of our family’s still there, so it’s still kind of a special place.
❓What’s your all-time favorite movie? That’s a hard one. I think it’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It’s a romantic comedy with Kate Hudson. It’s cheesy, but good. I have fun with it.
❓What do you do for a living? I’m a nurse. I work in the operating room.
❓Any cool jobs in your past? Not really. I was a barista for awhile, to get myself through school, and I worked at a burger place. That’s it. Not very cool. I know how to make a latte pretty well now, so I guess that’s cool.
❓How long have you been a member at the gym? I think about a year now. Tryg and I joined in April of last year. There’s a guy here named Nick Marmo, do you know him? We know him outside of the gym and he told us he came here. Also, we only live like four blocks away, so it’s super-easy to get here. And it’s just been a really cool community the whole time.
❓Tell us about your all-time favorite pet. We just got a dog last year, and it’s our first dog together. His name is Woodford, like the whiskey, and he’s a Bernadoodle. That’s a Bernese Mountain Dog/Poodle mix.
❓And you named him after a kind of whiskey? Yes.
I now understand how you’re friends with Nick Marmo. Exactly! (Laughs) Yes, we’re whiskey drinkers.
❓What class or classes do you usually attend? Right now, we’re doing programming with Steph, so we don’t really come to classes anymore, but we used to come to the 5:30 class pretty religiously. We still come around that time every day. Every other day.
❓Pancakes, waffles, or french toast? Waffles. And they have to be kind of crispy. I don’t like the doughy stuff.
❓Were you an athlete growing up, and if so, what sports did you play and were you any good? Yes, I played volleyball for like 10 years. I like to think I was good. My parents said I was good. I played libero, which is a defensive specialist. You play on the back row, with a lot of diving. It was so fun. I miss it.
❓Where in Portland has the best burger? I’m not really a burger person. I like chicken sandwiches.
❓Where in Portland has the best chicken sandwich? To be honest, Burgerville has a really good chicken sandwich. We almost never go there anymore, but now I’m craving it, so I’m gonna have to go get one.
❓What’s your favorite workout/movement? Bench press, I think.
❓What’s your least favorite workout/movement? Oh, thrusters, easily. They’re horrible, every time.
❓What are some things you do in your free time? Free time? Well, I feel like we’re here a lot. (Laughs) I guess I’ve been learning to make sourdough bread recently, so I’m liking that. It’s really hard, a lot harder than I thought. They’re turning out okay, they’re just really tedious. It takes like two days. It’s a long process.
❓If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Time travel sounds really cool. It also sounds sort of dangerous, too. If I couldn’t do that, I guess flying would be my second choice.
❓What’s the longest you’ve ever stayed in the sauna? I think like 35 minutes. That’s not typical. I think I got caught talking to somebody, and I wanted to leave, but didn’t want to be rude.
❓The cold plunge? I haven’t done the cold plunge yet and I’m not sure I will. I’ve done them other places and… it’s stressful. It’s not fun. Maybe this summer I’ll try it again, when the weather’s hot.
❓Where was the hottest weather you’ve ever been in? I lived in Arizona for awhile, so I think it got up to maybe… 118? And Redding, California gets up to like 117 these days.
❓The coldest? Nothing crazy. I guess the coldest it’s been here in Portland, that’s the coldest I’ve been. Maybe in the ice storm.
❓Has a workout ever made you puke? Not here, but I have in the past. I did CrossFit in high school, and when I first started that, I think I puked the very first time I went. I think I was 14 or 15. I did CrossFit with my brother, and he gave me hell about puking.
❓What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I’ve had a cricket before, like a fried cricket. It was okay. You can just pop it in your mouth, super-easy. I don’t think I could eat a bigger bug. I’m not that adventurous.
❓What’s your current gym goal? I really want to get on one of these boards for squat, deadlift, or bench press.
❓What’s your advice for new members of the gym? Jump headfirst into the community side of it. I’m not super-social, I’m more shy, so it’s hard for me to talk to everybody. But once you get here, everyone’s so friendly. So if you just talk to the people who are talking to you, it makes you want to come here more often, because there’s always going to be someone you know.
