Hey team!!!
We are thrilled that there is so much interest in Barbell Club!
There are also a lot of questions.
This post will address those questions and hopefully clarify any confusion that exists.
⭑STRUCTURE & SCHEDULE⭑
There are TWO programs.
1️⃣ Powerlifting: Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift
2️⃣ Olympic Weightlifting: Snatch and Clean & Jerk
To make maximal gains, you should pick one program and stick with it.
Barbell Club will meet Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm and Saturday at 11am. If you come to the 5:30pm on Tuesday or Thursday and want to do the group class workout, that’s fine, but the coach’s focus will be on Barbell Club.
If you are participating in Barbell Club, you are (of course) still welcome to come to the regular group classes and do those workouts, but please be judicious with your overall training volume. Ask a coach if you have questions.
⭑EXPECTATIONS⭑
If you are participating in Barbell Club, you already have some level of familiarity with the lifts.
As a more experienced lifter, you are expected to take some ownership of your own training. Coaches will be watching and coaching, but you will not receive feedback on every single lift.
One of the best ways to assess your own movement is to film your lifts. You will see things you can’t feel when executing the lift, and you will be able to self-correct at least some of the time.
When you arrive, warm up, get the appropriate shoes on, and get moving under your bar. Both programs are robust and will likely take more than an hour to complete. That being said, the exercises are prioritized, so if you have limited time, get through as much as possible, or ask your coach for help deciding what to omit.
⭑SOME OTHER THOUGHTS⭑
Physical strength takes time to build. It’s not easy and requires a certain level of dedication and mental fortitude.
As coaches, we want nothing more than to see our athletes succeed. But there’s only so much we can do.
You are the only one who can lift the weight on your bar.
I’ll end with this quote from Henry Rollins’ article “Iron and the Soul” (highly recommended reading).
“There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength.”
